About Cide
Cide is a district of Kastamonu on Turkey's western Black Sea coast, 522 kilometres from İstanbul and 377 from Ankara by road. It has no airport and no railway, which is a large part of why its coastline has stayed as quiet as it has.
Two things shape the district. Along the shore, a run of coves sheltered between headlands — Gideros the best known among them. Inland, valleys and canyons cut back towards the Küre Mountains, close enough to the sea that you can be swimming in the morning and walking a gorge in the afternoon.
Cide also has a literary claim few districts its size can match: Rıfat Ilgaz, who wrote Hababam Sınıfı, was born here in 1911, and the house he was born in is now a museum. Rahime Kaptan, who carried ammunition along this coast during the War of Independence, was from Cide too. More recently the film Mukadderat was shot in the town and took three awards at the Antalya Golden Orange festival.
Location and Climate
Cide has the Black Sea climate: rain falls in every season and summers stay milder than inland Kastamonu. That constant moisture is why the forest around the district, and the green in its canyons, holds through the year.
