Rahime Kaptan
The woman skipper who carried ammunition in the War of Independence
About
Rahime Kaptan was a woman skipper from Cide who carried ammunition and supplies along the Black Sea during the War of Independence. Her crossings from Cide to İnebolu formed part of the supply line that reached the front.
Putting to sea on this coast in those years was a risk in itself, between enemy shipping and the weather. That a woman took it on is why she is remembered as one of the emblems of Turkish women's part in the resistance.
She died on 23 March 1964. Her grave is in the cemetery in Memiş Mahallesi — the same neighbourhood as our hotel — and is visited each year at memorial ceremonies.
The Cide connectionShe was from Cide, and her grave lies in the cemetery of Memiş Mahallesi, the neighbourhood our hotel stands in.
