Hababam Sınıfı

Novel, 1957

About

Hababam Sınıfı did not begin as a novel but as magazine pieces. Rıfat Ilgaz joined the writing staff of the humour magazine Dolmuş on 23 February 1956. Its writers took pen names from car parts, and his was "Stepne" — the spare tyre.

The pieces published under that name through 1956 and 1957 were gathered into a novel in 1957. Ilgaz had drawn on his own memories of the Kastamonu High School he attended.

The book uses comedy to take apart the Turkish education system — its copying, its rote learning, its hollow deference. It was adapted for the screen in 1975 by Ertem Eğilmez, who asked Ilgaz's permission, softened the sharpness of the prose and added several characters.

The Cide connectionIts author was born in Cide, and readers who come to the district can visit the house as a museum.
